Corporate Social Responsibility
The impact of climate change has been very severe for vulnerable communities in the coastal region whose dependence on weather-based production of subsistence food crops has dried up, leaving families food insecure. MobiMart, being based at the community level and having experienced growth, has vacated its old factory space and sponsored suitable economic activities in this old space to ensure the viable continuation of some business lines that MobiMart exited. The community supplies raw materials such as coconut and Moringa seeds. The members are then employed in preparing the raw materials, which are then utilized as inputs in producing natural oils.
Manufacturing Crude Oil Extracted from Unrefined Organic vegetable Oils
MobiMart is the pre-eminent manufacturer of crude oil extracted from unrefined organic vegetable oils. The MobiMart facility is based in Diani Beach where the focus is on the oil-bearing species such as Castor and Coconut which thrive naturally in the sun-kissed Kwale County. The process of extraction and procesing is one that empowers the community thus ensuring economic empowerment at the grassroots.
Dehauling is manual, whereby the coconut is removed from
the outer hull by hand using a traditionally modified clawbar. Removing the copra
from the coconut is also
a two-stage manual process.
The coconut is cracked by hitting it with a blunt metallic bar. The coconut water
spills and are left
with the two halves of the coconut.
These two halves are sun-dried until the copra starts to curl up and separate from
the
husk. The second stage is where the copra is scooped out of the shell using a spoon
like
traditional stainless-steel equipment. The copra is then sun dried and tested for
moisture content repeatedly until the point where ideal moisture content is
achieved.
The dried copra is then diced using stainless steel knives and loaded into stainless
steel buckets and ferried to the oil expelling press. The oil is expelled in a screw
type
stainless steel equipment. The diced dried copra is fed into the hopper and sucked
into screw press where it is squeezed and the crude oil expressed. The oil then
flows into a
stainless-steel pan and collected in a stainless-steel bucket. The oil is then hand
transported into a stainlesssteel drum for settling. Once the oil is settled for at
least
three days, it is then filtered and packaged as per customer requirements.
